Joseph L. C. Cheng is professor of international business and management at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is director of the Illinois Center for International Business Education and Research. He received his Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has previously taught at Ohio State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (visiting).

Dr. Cheng’s current research interests include strategy and organization design for transnational firms, globalization of industrial R & D, societal influence on management practices, and organizational change and innovation. He has published on these and other topics in leading academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Human Relations, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Management International Review, Management Science, and Organization Studies, among others.

Dr. Cheng has received recognition for teaching and research excellence, including an Outstanding Elective Professor award from the Ohio State MBA class of 1993, and a Best Paper award from the Organization and Management Theory Division of the Academy of Management. He regularly conducts executive training programs for business firms, nonprofit organizations, and universities. He is currently coeditor of the JAI research series Advances in International Management, and serves on the editorial review boards of numerous journals. He also was program chair of the international management division at the 2001 annual meeting of the Academy of Management, in Washington, D.C.
